Two years of five-hour nights. I thought I was buying time.

What I actually bought was slower work, shorter patience and a body that fell ill every second month. I was paying for those hours at a terrible exchange rate.

Seven hours, protected like a meeting I cannot move. Everything else got easier without me improving at anything.

I skipped an entire office event because I was convinced people had noticed how badly my presentation went that morning.

Months later I mentioned it to a colleague. She did not remember the presentation at all. She remembered that I had not come.

The audience I was performing for was never watching.

I had no time to over-rehearse, so I answered like a person instead of a script.

Every interview I had prepared obsessively for, I had performed in. This one I just talked. That was the difference.

A knee thing. Mild, annoying, easy to work around. I worked around it for fourteen months.

By the time I saw a doctor, the six-week fix had become a six-month one, with a stretch of it spent unable to climb stairs.

Small problems are cheap only while they are small. That is the whole discount.

I planned a side project for four months. Notebooks, mind maps, three different names for it.

The week I finally built the ugliest possible version, I learned more in six days than in those four months. Every question I had been trying to answer in my head answered itself the moment something real existed.

Now I give myself two days to plan anything. After that I have to have made something, even if it is bad.

A medical reimbursement of Rs 38,000. I had every document. I just kept moving it down the list.

By the time I opened the file, the ninety-day window had closed. Nobody warned me, because nobody was tracking it except me.

Anything with an expiry date now gets done the same week, badly if needed.

I turned down two speaking invitations because I did not feel prepared enough. I accepted the third only because I could not find a polite excuse in time.

I was terrible. I was also fine. Nobody died, and the fourth one was easier.

Confidence is not the entry fee. It is the receipt.

I did not clear it. I was certain that was the end of the story.

I spent the following month in bed, and then a second month. Those two months cost me more than the result ever did. The result was one bad day. The response was sixty.

Now I give myself one honest day to feel it. The next morning I have to do one small thing.

I researched gyms for a month. Compared plans, read reviews, calculated the annual cost.

Then I walked after dinner for three weeks because the gym had not opened yet. The back pain went. The membership was never needed.

At thirty-four I left a career I had built for eleven years. Everyone called it brave. It was not brave, it was overdue.

The hardest part was not the pay cut. It was admitting the eleven years were not wasted just because they ended.

They funded the change. That is what they were for.

Whenever I watch YouTube videos about designing a website or building something, it feels like, “Oh, I can easily do this.”

But when I actually start working on it, I realise there are so many things that weren't covered in the video.

And that’s when the real learning begins. I end up learning many things only after I start doing the work myself—not by reading about them or watching more videos.

It felt efficient. Twenty saved minutes a day, five days a week.

Six years later I was in physiotherapy twice a week for four months. That is the arithmetic nobody shows you.

Eleven words under something I had worked on for a month. I deleted the post that night.

I did not publish anything for two years after that. I have no idea who they were. They have no idea I exist.

Fourteen months, and it closed. I called it a wasted year for a long time.

But I still wake at five. I still speak to strangers without flinching. I still read the numbers before the opinions. The company died. Those did not.

I was owed one. I am still owed one.

What I was not owed was four years of carrying it. The debt was theirs. The interest was entirely mine.

Six years of moving money into an account that did nothing exciting. It felt like a waste every month.

Then a job ended without warning. Those six boring years bought me four calm months to choose properly instead of desperately.

Every invitation, every favour, every extra piece of work. I thought I was being useful.

At the end of it I could not name one thing I had finished. I had been fully occupied and completely still.

Eleven versions. Different fonts, different verbs, one whole weekend on the summary paragraph.

The offer came from four lines sent to someone I admired, asking what they were working on. I had hesitated for two weeks over those four lines.

I spent years waiting for words that were not in his vocabulary, and missing everything that was.

He showed up. Every single time. I was too busy listening for a sentence to notice the pattern.

The watch was three months of savings. I wore it to a meeting that went badly anyway.

Nothing I have ever bought has changed how I felt for longer than a fortnight. Things I built have never stopped.

The screen time report said four hours and forty minutes. I assumed it was counting wrong.

It was not. I was not overworked, I was interrupted, roughly every eleven minutes, by myself.

A course I wanted was priced beyond what I could justify. I wrote and rewrote an email asking if there was any flexibility, and did not send it for six days.

They replied in eleven minutes with a thirty percent offer.

Every number I have ever accepted without asking, I now wonder about.

I have written maybe forty study schedules in my life. Colour coded, hour by hour. I have completed none of them.

Last year I committed to three minutes of one thing daily. Just three. Some days that was all I did.

Eleven months later it is the only routine that has ever survived a bad week, because a bad week cannot break three minutes.
